| Melville Hall International Airport is about 10 minutes forth. At this five-room property, a 17th century mansion and distillery, guests receive personalized attention and numerous amenities. The day at Habitation Chabert starts with delivery of a newspaper and breakfast, both of which are complimentary. Guests can loosen up by the property's pool or hit the beach. If other island adventures beckon, the hotel will fain counsel. Diving, whale-watching, catamaran day trips and big-game fishing are all on a regular basis arranged by Habitation Chabert's staff. The hotel's eatery, Le Jardin des Delices, is a 20-seat al fresco experience, considered one of the Dominica's best restaurants. Advanced dishes include broiled marinated dolphin with ginger and lime, ice-cold vegetable soup with goat-cheese coulis and croutons, and for dessert, chocolate and grapefruit risotto. Red bougainvillea and hibiscus swathe the property's buildings, but on the inside, the tropic environment permeates. Guestrooms at Habitation Chabert are ventilated by gardens. The ground floor is comprised of a single space opening out into the greenery, containing two independent guestrooms. Each has an en suite bathroom and king-size bed. Mosquito nets are de rigueur and drape the beds. Other rooms, decorated by Napoleonic furniture, are located in the mansion's tower. Courbaril-wood floors and Gallic artist Johanne Thoreau's sculptures, paintings and drawings complete the interior spaces' décor. All rooms are air-conditioned and comprise safes. Habitation Chabert offers adventure, serenity and a reliable glimpse of Dominica, off the battered path.
